Catalogue filters are what make a large range usable. But configuring them comes down to data quality rather than to the module.
What is included
- building filter groups from product specifications;
- binding filters to the relevant categories;
- normalising values — "Black", "black" and the same word written in another language all have to collapse into one option;
- display order: the most used specifications first;
- configuring indexation of filtered pages;
- performance checks at your catalogue size.
The usual reason "the filter does not work"
Not the module, the data. Specifications are filled in inconsistently — different capitalisation, stray spaces, sometimes different languages. The filter offers a dozen colour options instead of three, and becomes unusable.
So the work usually starts with putting specifications in order, and that is the largest part of the task — especially where the catalogue was populated by imports from several suppliers.
About duplicate pages
Every filter combination creates a separate URL. Without indexation rules, a store with a thousand products becomes tens of thousands of near-identical pages to a search engine, and crawl budget goes on those instead of on product pages.
