WooCommerce and OpenCart are the two most popular e-commerce solutions in Ukraine. Here is an honest look at which jobs each one suits.
Architecture
WooCommerce is a plugin for WordPress. Its strength: an enormous ecosystem of WP plugins, Gutenberg, a REST API. Its weakness: heavy, and slow without proper caching.
OpenCart/ocStore is a standalone e-commerce CMS. Lighter and faster out of the box, but with a smaller ecosystem.
Performance
OpenCart on PHP-FPM plus Redis shows a TTFB of 50–100 ms with no CDN. WooCommerce without LiteSpeed or Redis sits at 300–800 ms. Configured properly, both can reach a PageSpeed score above 90.
Support for Ukrainian services
Both have plugins for Nova Poshta, LiqPay and WayForPay. ocStore ships with them; for WooCommerce they have to be installed separately (the MORKVA plugins are good and free).
SEO capabilities
WooCommerce with Yoast or RankMath gives you a more powerful SEO toolkit. OpenCart needs more manual configuration, but the SEO results are the same with the right approach.
When to choose which
| WooCommerce | OpenCart/ocStore |
|---|---|
| You already have a WordPress site | A new store from scratch |
| You need a blog plus a store | A catalogue of 5,000+ products |
| Elementor/Gutenberg layouts | High performance |
