OpenCart vs ocStore 2025: The Differences and Which to Choose

If you are considering opening an online store on OpenCart, or already run one and want to understand the difference between official OpenCart and the Ukrainian ocStore, this article is for you.

What ocStore is

ocStore is a fork of OpenCart built by a Ukrainian team. It is based on OpenCart 3.x with a set of improvements that matter on the Ukrainian market:

• built-in PHP 8.0–8.3 support (official OC 3.x does not run on PHP 8.x without patches)
• WebP image support
• a blog module included
• a stronger SEO layer
• Ukrainian-language documentation and support

The key differences

PHP compatibility

The most important one: ocStore 3.0.4.x officially supports PHP 8.3, while the original OpenCart 3.x needs patches to run on PHP 8.x. For production servers that is critical — PHP 8.1 reached EOL in December 2025.

Local-market fit

ocStore ships with modules for Nova Poshta, LiqPay and other Ukrainian services. In stock OpenCart you have to find and install them yourself.

Which to choose in 2025?

The recommendation is straightforward: if you are in Ukraine, use ocStore 3.0.4.1. If you are planning to scale into international markets, look at OpenCart 4.x with its new namespace architecture.

Conclusion

ocStore is the better choice for Ukrainian e-commerce in 2025, thanks to PHP 8.x support and localisation. OpenCart 4.x is the interesting option for new projects wanting a REST API and a modern architecture.
