OCFilter Setup for OpenCart
Contents
Article
Once a catalogue runs to hundreds of products, a shopper without a decent filter simply will not find what they came for — and leaves. OCFilter is the most widely used filtering module for OpenCart: filtering by specification, price and availability, with an SEO bonus on top.
What OCFilter gives you
- filtering by attribute, option, manufacturer and price;
- instant product updates with no page reload;
- SEO filter pages with their own URLs and meta tags;
- a product count against every option.
The SEO advantage
OCFilter’s real strength is turning filter combinations into their own rankable pages (say, "red trainers size 42"). Those are extra entry points from search for long-tail queries.
How it is configured
- module installed and filters created;
- characteristics mapped to product attributes and options;
- SEF URLs and meta tags for filter pages;
- styled to match your theme, and speed verified.
The pitfalls
Mismatched characteristics produce "empty" filters, and uncontrolled URL generation floods the index with duplicates. So it matters which combinations are actually opened up for indexation.
Common questions
Will the filter slow the catalogue down?
Configured properly and with caching, no — OCFilter is built for large catalogues.
Can it filter by price and availability?
Yes, alongside the specifications.
What about filter duplicates?
Indexation rules are configured so only the valuable pages reach search.
